A Pregnancy Pillow is Perfect for Moms

Author: Monica Nelson

A pregnancy pillow could be just the thing mom needs the most during pregnancy. When you are pregnant it can be difficult to get comfortable and to sleep and stay asleep. These maternity pillows come in a variety of shapes and sizes. There is every kind from a small wedge to a full body length huggable size. The little wedge pregnancy pillow is simply a wedge shape that expectant moms can put under their tummy when they sleep on their side, or under their back if they sleep or rest their back. If you have ever been pregnant you know how hard it is to get comfortable when sleeping at night. A good maternity pillow, when placed under your tummy, can help support your abdomen and cradle your baby. It may also reduce the strain on your back and help allow adequate blood flow throughout the body. This can help provide the needed oxygen and vitamins to baby, and may help to lower any incidence of sore legs or swollen ankles. A pregnancy pillow is usually not so large that it will take up most of the bed or be in the way of your hubby.

Many women find that a pregnancy pillow can be super helpful in their first trimester. Looking at pregnancy week by week, the maternity pillow seems to be most welcome starting at pregnancy week 4 or pregnancy week 5. Some moms find the wedge shape is too small for their pregnant tummy. They prefer other pregnancy pillows that are larger and are shaped in a variety of ways. Some are full body-size snuggle pillows that support your front and back at the same time. Others are shaped like long beanbags and you cuddle up to them, hugging them and wrapping yourself around them. Many women are naturally tired during pregnancy due to carrying the baby. In fact, fatigue is one of the common pregnancy symptoms. Another of the early pregnancy symptoms is backache. Using a good maternity pillow can help relieve both of these pregnancy symptoms, by supporting both the abdomen and the lower back. It is also comforting to the legs to sleep with a pillow between the knees.

Lying on the side while sleeping is one of the preferred positions during pregnancy. This position is where a long, tube shaped maternity pillow can come in handy. It can be molded into various shapes to conform to the natural shape of the body. It can be tucked behind the back, then go up and under the head, and come down the front to go under the pregnant belly, and then the end is tucked between the knees. It offers all-over comfort and support for mom and baby. These make a very thoughtful baby shower gift for expectant mothers. After your pregnancy term is over and your baby is born, these pregnancy pillows can also be used for support while nursing your baby. A good, comfy, ergonomically shaped pregnancy pillow can make life easier for you and your little bundle of joy.
