Mailboxes - Vandal Proof: Victims of Abuse in the Form of Baseball Bats, Rocks or Even Pipe Bombs

Author: Ramon Ross

It's become increasingly common for homeowners to display unique mailboxes as a way to showcase their personality. Nevertheless, although these designs may spruce up a home's appearance, they are typically far from secure. In truth, mailboxes are primary targets for criminals who are looking to gather personal information. To that end, the only unique mailboxes consumers should really be looking for are those that will guarantee that their mail remains safe.

For those who live in rural areas, mailbox vandalism is an unfortunately common occurrence. Due to the isolation of rural mailboxes, they are often the victims of abuse in the form of baseball bats, rocks or even pipe bombs. Even unintentional attacks by rogue snowplows can cause serious damage to mailboxes.

Life isn't easy for your average roadside mailbox. Besides being the target of attempted vandalism, the lack of visibility makes these small and exposed containers perfect targets for mail theft. As recent developments have proven, this kind of mail theft--which can involve important documents like bank statements and credit cards--can lead to identity theft, a serious and destructive crime.

The way individuals in society communicate has certainly changed in the last 100 years. The advent of the fax machine and Internet has made it possible to receive correspondences at all hours, day or night. Of course, this has not made traditional "snail mail" an obsolete form. Oddly enough, while we have updated our methods of communication, the way in which we receive traditional mail has barely changed at all.
