How to Make Your House-Painting Project Look Professional

Author: Brooke Sikula

When it comes to home improvements, few projects provide the combination of low cost and high value that a fresh coat of paint can provide. As a matter of fact, studies have shown that painting the house, both the exterior and the interior, is one of the few home improvement projects that can actually pay for itself. The money you put into buying paints and supplies can more than pay for itself in increased home value, not to mention the psychological value such an improvement can bring to yourself and your family.

Of course it is important to make this do it yourself project look as professional as possible, and that means planning, hard work and patience. If you have never painted before, or if it has been awhile since your last painting project, it may be worth your while to take a quick refresher course. There are many such painting courses offered by home improvement stores and other such venues, so it should be easy to find such a course.

Likewise, if a friend or family member is a good handyman, it doesnt hurt to ask him or her for advice before proceeding. Often another set of eyes can help you see things you have been missing.

It is also important to take the decorating scheme of the home into account when choosing a color for your homes new look. When shopping for paint, it is a good idea to bring along a photograph or two of the home so you can more accurately match the new paint to your existing home dcor. Of course, this may not be necessary if you plan to remodel the home as well, but if you plan to keep your current dcor it is essential.

It is important to pay attention to color when you shop for paint. A bright and airy color such as yellow or white can create a warm and sunny appearance, while a deeper color like red can provide a warm and welcoming atmosphere for your guests. It is important to understand how each color will affect you as you shop.

It is also important to write down all the equipment and supplies you will need to complete your professional house painting project. The typical home painting job will require drop cloths, paint rollers, a selection of brushes and perhaps a paint sprayer. If you are not sure what you will need, be sure to consult with the staff of your local home improvement store.
