Cremation Urn Options

Author: Jennifer Johnston-Giuliano

Although death is not an easy topic to discuss, everyone has thought about it at some point in their life and some even preplan for their farewell event. Preplanning takes some financial and emotional stress off your loved ones who are left behind.

If you have chosen cremation, you are not alone. It is estimated that 40% of humans will choose cremation as their their final choice by the year 2010. Here are some things you should know about cremation urns, what size cremation urn you should choose and various choices that are available today..

Bio Degradable Urn - Cremation Urns for land, sea or green burials. All materials used in the making of biodegradable urns should be non-toxic and environmentally safe. These cremation urns dissolve completely in water and are suitable for land or sea scattering.

Companion Urn - Cremation Urn that can accommodate two adults or one large adult.

Cremains - Cremated Remains

Cremation Urn Sizing - Cubic Inches (CI) is the volume or space cremains take up and it is also the measurement of how much cremains a cremation urn can hold. 1 lb. of body weight will yield roughly 1 cubic inch of cremains.

Example: A cremated 50 lb. person or pet will yield about 40 cubic inches of cremains (almost 40 CI). This person would need an urn that is about 40-50 CI. A cremated 100 lb. person needs a cremation urn that is roughly 100 cubic inches or larger and a 200 lb. person needs a cremation urn that is roughly 200 cubic inches or larger. The 1 to 1 ratio of Weight to CI will insure you purchase an urn that is large enough, 99% of the time. Cremation urn descriptions always lists a volume (capacity for ashes) in Cubic Inches. So if you know how much the deceased weighed - then you know the volume (CI.) of the ashes. Remember that a cremation urn can be too small (in volume) but is only too big if you think it's too big.

Green Burial - Cremated remains are placed in a biodegradable urn and then placed into a burial plot where only native plants or trees can be placed as a marker. This saves land and benefits the environment.

Hand Blown Cremation Urn - Created by master blown glass artists using a unique process. Cremains can also be incorporated into some hand blown glass cremation urns.

Keepsake Urn - A keepsake is usually a small urn or pendant that holds a small portion of cremains, small piece of cloth, a lock of hair, dried flowers, etc. (usually 1 - 2 cubic inches)

Rosary Cremation Urn - Beautiful hand-made rosary beads that will hold a small portion of cremains, small piece of cloth, a lock of hair, dried flowers, etc. (usually 1 - 2 cubic inches).

Traditional cremation urns made of metals, woods, ceramics or stone are also still available however today there are so many more choices. Whether you want your cremains carried discreetly around your neck, made into a simulated diamond, spread in a favorite place, shared with loved ones or shot up into space, there are always new and unique ways to commemorate your life or the life of a loved one.
