The Best Things in Life are Free

Author: Sylvia White

The best things in life are free. It is something I have been thinking about lately what are the best things in life? Many years ago when this saying was born it was probably true, but what do we have now that is free? Good Health! not really when you consider how much the government takes from your wages for national health or what you pay for for private health care, and of course what is spent on the millions of vitamin tablets consumed daily.

The countryside! Is there any left? If so it is very hard to find these days unless you are prepared to travel great distances, and when you do find it make sure you are not trespassing because it is probably private property.

If you venture into the country side make sure you do not pick the wild flowers it is against the law, they are not free.

Do not remove the pebbles from the beaches, they do not belong to you and they are not free.

Water used to be free but no longer, before long you will be paying for every drop you use. There is one solution here. Yes! lets go back to the days of old and place a rain barrel in the garden. Mind you in this day and age of acid rain and contamination from nuclear fuels etc, would it be drinkable?

The Sun. Hooray they can not charge us for that, but wait a minute! What about all the warnings about the damage from the suns rays and the cost of making sure you are covered in sun cream to stop you from getting burned. There must be something out there that is free but where is it and what? Your children are definitely not free, they cost you a fortune to rear. Love and marriage! No chance you need a lot of money for that.

Free speech! Even that is fast disappearing.

Within your home you are free to do what you wish. well almost! If you watch the television make sure you have a licence. If you like chatting to friends on the phone be prepared for a huge phone bill. and if you want to access the internet WoW what does that cost?

If you want to stay warm think about the gas or electricity bill, and make sure you pay your rates or council tax on your home or you will end up in jail, YOU will not be free.

It is free to enjoy your garden, how lovely to sit on the lawn amongst the lovely flower borders. But watch out if the sun shines for a day or two the hose pipe ban comes into force and your beautiful flowers disappear, your fresh green lawn shrivels up from lack of water, it is still free of course but not so enjoyable.

Can anyone tell me what is free in this day and age because I am finding it very hard to come up with anything?

Two for one, buy one get one free. if so why is my shopping bill going up instead of down!

That is fairly simple to work out, a few coppers added here and there to the every day items we buy soon make up the cost of your free item. Well like every thing else we are accustomed to our lot and we don't really expect anything for free, so we can now strike the saying (The best things in life are free) out of the phrase books because it has become redundant.

Unless of course you can come up with something.
