The news article I recently read explains that each year, about 2,500 mostly: pregnant women, newborn babies , elderly and others with impaired immune systems, get seriously ill from Listeria bacterial infection, most especially from cold cuts that are not re cooked prior to consumption. Of these 2,500 people about 500 die from the infection. (Or perhaps the medical treatment for the infection.)

The laboratory created virus cocktail attacks various strains of the Listeria bacteria and might save these 500 lives every year. The cocktail has been thoroughly tested, does not harm plant or animal cells and has been shown to be very low risk when sprayed on processed meats ACCORDING to REGULATIONS that will be enforced by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Would you prefer your wieners without the virus cocktail? Would you rather take your chances with the bacteria? Sorry, they will not be marking the packages that have the virus cocktail. Might hurt sales you see. With consumers just paying an extra nickel or dime for each treated package, the developer stands to make millions and the American consumers will again become unwitting guinea pigs for a totally unnecessary food additive - to save lives that could as easily be lost to other causes. A tiny problem with a great big, high profit solution. Don't you just love creative marketing? Pass the mustard please?
