Hurricanes and Public Speaking

Author: Lance Winslow

Many public inspirational speakers will talk about hurricanes and they do this to illustrate a point with their audience. If you are a motivational speaker you may wish to weave into your topics of conversation the various hurricanes because they will come with emotional connotations especially the more catastrophic and large category hurricanes and named storms.

Consider if you will talking about the international terrorist attacks in New York City during 911 with that comes images from the TV set that are ingrained in our minds and that sets off any emotional thought process with the audience. Large category hurricanes such as Hurricane Katrina, Hurricane Rita, and Hurricane Wilma all come with them images of devastation and destruction and those images replay in the audience's mind when you bring them up.

If you are giving a public speech and you wish people to be drawn into the emotions of your speech and get something out of that then it makes sense to weave in stories about hurricanes. Of course you do not want to weave in too much doom and gloom if you are trying to give an inspirational speech, but adversity builds character within us all and if you are trying to show this, then you must have some hardship, overcoming those challenges, triumphing over adversity to spark thoughts and images in the audience. Please consider this 2006.
