Time Management; Stepping Out Of Time

Author: Nick Arrizza, M.D.

Much has been written about time management. All of it is based on the mind set that time, by nature is finite i.e. you only have so much of it and that is all you get. Hence the task generally becomes one of "prioritizing" and this is what much of the "time management" movement is about.

Have you however ever read about the possibility of actually "expanding, not just your perception of time but, time itself? I doubt until now. That's what this article is about, believe it or not.

Yes, at this point you may already be feeling skeptical and like it's time to move on to the next article, probably because you feel this is "wasting" your finite time. Please hang in there for a little while.

In my view time is a relative concept that is largely "structured" on our deeply held beliefs/emotions about it. Such beliefs actually become "almost" hard-wired in the cells of our bodies by deep and repetitive conditioning that literally entrains our physiological rhythms to become synchronized with it. This is why some individuals can tell you what time it is even without looking at their watch, or why some are able to awaken in the morning at the same time.

Now I say "almost" hard-wired because in fact this conditioning "can" be changed by simply becoming aware of and releasing from the mind/body such conditioned beliefs/emotions. I wish to add a word of caution here however. Such beliefs/emotions are "very" deeply conditioned for some because of the endless daily entrainment that occurs if one happens to "live by the clock".

In other words if you continually "watch the clock" then you are essentially letting it become "the clock" that runs your "mind/body/life clock" and hence determines the "speed", if you will, at which your time passes. So what I'm saying here is that time is relative and that you can ultimately determine for yourself the "speed" at which you wish it to move at for yourself.

This is clearly evident in the many reported cases where individuals were able to "step out of time" so to speak and accomplish tasks that normally would have taken them much longer than the actual time that has elapsed.

So in order to reclaim control over your time the first thing I would suggest is to make it a habit to free yourself from the influence of the clock. In other words get rid of your clocks. As you do this notice what comes up inside you. Here you will become aware of the conditioning Im referring to.

For instance, I'm sure the suggestion to separate yourself for the clock probably evoked feelings of terror in some of you.

You see, this fear of being without the clock is part of the conditioning Im talking about. We have actually become so "dependent" on it that we are afraid that our lives will collapse if we are separated from it even for a minute.

Now that I have helped you identify an aspect of the conditioning that "structures" your time I can go on to the next step which is showing you how it can literally be released from your mind/body. Here we go. This should only take a minute.

The "fear of getting rid of my clocks" is necessary for me to have inside me because:

1. It helps me know how much time I have left, so that,

2. I can prioritize my life/work, so that,

3. I can get the important things done, so that,

4. I can feel accomplished, successful, happy, fulfilled, and at peace.

(A) In other words my "fear of getting rid of my clocks" makes me feel accomplished, successful, happy, fulfilled and at peace.

Is statement (A) feeling true to you? Let's look more closely at what being in that fear actually does to you. Doesn't it make you feel rushed, anxious, un-nerved, confused, scattered, pressured, lacking time, inadequate, powerless, inefficient, frustrated and so on?

So does that sound anything like statement (A)? Absolutely not!

So which is the truth? Well surely not statement (A). If you see that then just admit it to yourself now and notice how you feel afterwards.

You might now be feeling freer, a sense of relief, lighter, more relaxed, calmer, a greater sense of being in the moment, more present, happier, and possibly feeling more in control of your life. In other words you have, in a manner of speaking, reclaimed control over more of your life and therefore your time.

Isn't that the same as saying that you now have more time? That's because the clocks actually wrestle your time, i.e. your life, away from you don't they?

You will likely see over the next little while that your dependence on or your inclination to rely on the clock has lessened. When you do this will likely come as a surprise to you. Enjoy your surprise and your life.
