Pearl Earrings

Author: Max Bellamy

Pearls are produced by oysters and are valued as gemstones. You can find pearls in many different shapes and colors and the most common are cultured. This is because in every 10,000 oysters there is probably only one natural pearl. A cultured pearl is a tiny bead that is implanted in an oyster and left to grow. It is coated with layers of nacre -- a pearl like substance that creates a lustrous pearl.

Pearl earrings come in many different styles including simple studs and pearl dangles. There is a pair of pearl earrings that fits all budgets, so shop around and you will find a pair that suits your taste and budget. For example, freshwater pearls are very affordable and can be purchased for as little as $25. In this prices range, there are pearls that are fake, or faux pearls, and can be purchased for as little as $5. Freshwater pearls are available in a variety of styles for causal and elegant wear.

For slightly more money, you can combine freshwater pearls with other gems like cubic zirconias that make for an even more elegant design. These earrings are priced $25 to $50. If your taste is more expensive then for $100 or more you will find black saltwater pearls. True saltwater pearls come from Tahiti. All others are dyed or treated to achieve the black color. Tahitian pearls are natural black and have not been treated in any way. Earrings that are made with round pearls are considered to be of the highest quality. The rule of thumb is the bigger the pearl, the more expensive. Round pearls used in earrings are measured in millimeters. The luster of the pearl is considered the most important aspect in determining the value - the highest grade of luster is AAA or very high.
