When Is It Best to Visit Alaska, the Hottest Vacation Spot?

Author: jeff Beale

Alaska, once deemed vacationland for only the heartiest of souls, has become a getaway choice for all ages and types of tourists. However, no matter whether you prefer a trailblazing experience or a view from the deck of a luxury liner, you'll want to consider seasonal weather conditions when planning your trip.

Predictably, summer is Alaska's hot tourist season, when surprisingly mild temperatures range from daytime highs in the 60s to 80s ('F) and then cool to the 40s and 50s in the evening. The warmest days occur from mid June through mid July, but other pleasing options exist beyond that narrow window. In fact, if you want to avoid pesky mosquitoes, plan your summertime trip to arrive in late July. By then, insects cannot survive the nightly frosts. Daylight, averaging 19 hours in Alaska during the summer months, is also prolonged from May through September.

For several reasons, the shoulder months of May and September can be ideal times to tour Alaska. Early seasonal travel in May promises drier weather throughout the state, and migrating wildlife offer excellent viewing. Wildflowers, too, create a spectacular daytime show. With much to see and do, travelers can also take advantage of reduced, off-peak rates.
Because of fall's early arrival to Alaska, September days spotlight bright yellow aspen and willow trees in vivid contrast to blazing reds of the tundra. At the same time, high mountain peaks shine white with the season's first snows. Wildlife, fattening up for the long winter, also appear in herds which graze in the lower altitudes

No matter the particular dates you select for your escape to the 49th State, you'll want to prepare for all types of weather conditions. June can deliver driving rains, while August returns with endless sunshine. Most certain about Alaska's weather is its changeability.
